A patent is an exclusive property right to an invention. It gives an inventor the right to exclude others from making, using or selling an invention for a period of seventeen years in the United States, its territories, and possessions. A patent cannot be renewed except by act of Congress. Design patents for ornamental devices are granted for 3.   The patent process can be expensive, so the last thing you want to do is spend a lot of money preparing and filing an application when there is easy to find prior art that will prevent a patent.

I've looked at all the Patent Advice books, I've talked to lots of other great thinkers, inventors and entrepreneurs, I've surveyed former customers and, after doing all of that, I am convinced that “How to Patent Ideas, Information and Inventions” is the single best advice for protecting your ideas and inventions. Patents are basically copyrights for inventions, defined by U.S. patent law as "any new and useful process, machine, manufacture, or composition of matter, or any new and useful improvement thereof." Unlike copyrights, patents protect the idea or design of the invention, rather than the tangible form of the invention itself.

Utility patents, also known as “patents for invention,” are the most common patents. They are issued in connection with new and useful processes, machines, manufactures, compositions of matter, or improvements. Examples of inventions protected by utility patents include computer software, investment strategy, medical equipment, tools. And the patents provided the added incentive of encouraging the introduction of the new techniques of celestial navigation. In England at the turn of the fifteenth century, Venetian patents for invention thus manifested as patents for discovery. Yet these were few, and not really repeated.
